Montgomery justified his decision in terms of the number of lives saved: “To persist in the advance to Catania would have meant very heavy casualties … the object could be achieved with less loss of life by operating on the Adrano axis.” But when the campaign was over, General David Belcham broke ranks and contradicted his master: “If Monty and Patton had made a co-ordinated drive around Etna to Messina they would have got there more quickly with less loss of life.”

That part of Monty’s army still following his original route up the east coast now met stiff German resistance and came to a halt at Catania. The other half of his army, Leese’s Anglo-Canadian corps advancing northward along the Caltagirone road, also made slow progress, as strong German forces moved in to block it.
